Tummy fat is a big problem for lots of men and women, and unfortunately, there is no magic pill to help you be rid of it! The problem is, not only is it unsightly, is also carries the serious health risks of diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and high cholesterol levels, amongst just a few, and the only way to successfully improve the general appearance of your abdominal region is through a combination of diet and exercise.
But, it’s not all doom and gloom, there are actually lots of things you can do to get rid of belly fat! One of them is by targeting it through your nutrition. There are certain types of food that are really good at fighting the fat around your middle, whereas other food will most certainly not help not help the situation.
I have made a list of 10 of my favourite gut-busting foods that you can include in your diet to help shrink your tum!!
TOP 10 STOMACH FAT FIGHTING FOODS
1. Coconut oil
The fact is, to lose fat, we have to include good sources of healthy fat in our diet, and coconut oil is one of the best types of good fat you can eat! It contains short and medium-chain fatty acids that help in taking off excessive weight by giving your body the healthy fats necessary to burn body fat. It is also stable at high temperatures, and easy to digest which makes it the perfect cooking oil!
2. Eggs (free range)
These are nutrient dense powerhouses when it comes to burning fat. They are loaded with protein, vitamins B6, B12, A, D, E, and K, folate, choline, lutein, calcium, iron, phosphorus, zinc, and omega-3 fatty acids, they are low in calories and fat, and they also contain an amino acid called leucine, which acts as a catalyst burning extra fats.
Avocados are a nutrient-dense fruit which are quite high in good fats — both monounsaturated and polyunsaturated, and they are loaded with fibre, which prevents hunger and keeps you feeling full and satisfied. The monounsaturated fat in avocados actually helps to reduce the inflammation that can lead to high cholesterol, as well as prevent the blood sugar spikes that tell your body to store excess calories as fat, particularly around your midsection.
Berries are very low sugar fruits, provoking much less of an insulin response than many others such as our best friend the banana. They’re also packed full of fibre which helps them provide a slower release of energy, and on top of all that they’re loaded with vitamins that can help eliminate cravings (cravings can actually come from vitamin deficiencies believe it or not – for a non-scientific example, just look at someone on a processed food filled diet, and see how much they crave even more crap!)
5. Salmon (go for wild salmon which is only available from March until September)
This is the ultimate belly fat fighting food, as its packed high with protein and belly flab fighting omega-3. Most people are deficient in omega-3 (and are actually eating up to 20 times too much omega-6), and by ensuring you’re getting a good loading of omega 3 each day, you can really begin to nail into your belly fat stores. Don’t like fish? Hit a high quality omega 3 supplement 2-3 times a day (liquid is best, not capsules).
Packed with protein, fresh quality meat sources are essential in the belly-fat fight. Organic (grass fed) beef, actually contains something called CLA, which has been shown by studies to burn fat. When you eat protein, your body will actually burn up to 30% of its calories after you eat it!
7. Green Vegetables
Such as broccoli, cauliflower, kale, sprouts (YUK!) and cabbage contain something called indole-3-carbinol, which actually helps us to fight environmental oestrogens and xenoestrogens which can lead to belly fat accumulation. Juicing these veggies into one drink is a really good way of getting in a large amount of nutrients!
8. Spicy foods
Capsaicin is the active ingredient in chilli peppers and chilli powder, and has been shown to increase calorie-burning, stabilise blood sugar levels, which therefore reduces fat storage. It’s also a potent antioxidant and so helps fight free radicals doing damage in your body too.
Cinnamon has been found to contain a type of antioxidant that increases insulin sensitivity, and helps to stabilise blood sugar, which means you store less fat. Add it to hot drinks like tea or coffee for flavouring, add it to porridge or cereal in the morning or even cook it into your food for dinner.
Black beans, navy beans and lima beans all provide your body with loads of fibre which not only helps you feel fuller for longer, but also helps your body to detoxify itself and process all the rubbish out of your diet.
